With the upcoming holiday, I think this is a time to reflect on family, quality time and quality of life issues. Our family of origin is so powerful, our homes can be a place of security and a haven from the world where we go to renew and restore ourselves or it can be a place that we need to leave because the circumstances are so toxic and dysfunctional that it does not bring out the best within us. Working with the youth in the community I get a chance to see on the front lines what happens when people feel disconnected from their homes despite how it may appear from the outside; behaviors to look for include runaway behavior, substance use, excessive time at a friends house or in school, closed lines of communication at home among others. People may lie, actions do not and by our actions and that of our children, we can truly see what is happening on our home and are empowered to take positive steps to making our homes and families a better reflection of our best self.
